A certification in supply chain indicates that you have completed a structured course and passed a series of exams. A supply chain certification indicates that you have developed a high degree of competency and understanding in the supply chain. The two of the most known supply chain certifications are the CPSM or Certified Professional in Supply Management that was developed by the Institute for Supply Management and the CSCP or the Certified Supply Chain Professional of APICS. On the other hand, a certificate is a broad description that would entail that an individual has completed an education experience, which can be basic, trade show seminar or a structured online certificate program. Professionals should take note that a certificate program generally does not confer a professional credential, while a certification does. Before signing up any certificate or certification program, be sure to ask the following questions:
- How will I demonstrate my competency and understanding?
- Will this certification or certificate program determine my level of competency?
- Will this help me improve my career?
- What are the underlying examinations that I will have to take?
- What type of tests am I going to take?
- Will this help me improve my credentials?
